GPS tracking nabbed boyfriend of murdered Youngstown woman

But how police CATCH crininals is evolving.

Case in point was the technology used this week --- in Youngstown and in Niagara Falls to catch JeShawn Elliott.

27 Investigates these new tools now available to law enforcement.

GERRY RICCIUTTI/WKBN NEWS: As detectives and prosecutors in both Youngstown and Niagara Falls work to piece together details of their case.

We're learning just how quickly police went from first learning about the crime to catching their suspect.

It all started just after 4:30 Wednesday afternoon.

911 CALL: "MY BROTHER JUST CONFESSED TO ME THAT HE STABBED HIS GIRLFRIEND.

" The first officers arrived at JeShawn Elliott's home on the northside a few minutes later and immediately started looking for him -- and girlfriend Anvia Mickens.

LT.

DOUG BOBOVNYIK: "WE DETERMINED THAT THIS BECAME A CRITICAL SITUATION.

AND THERE WERE EXIGIENT CIRCUMSTANCES ATTACHED.

" Fearing the the woman's life was in danger.

Police contacted OnStar and T-Mobile to see if they could locate the couple.

YPD DISPATCHER: "WE NEED TO SEE IF WE CAN PUT A PING ON A CELL PHONE NUMBER ON A POSSIBLE STABBING VICTIM.

" GERRY RICCIUTTI/WKBN NEWS: About an hour after the initial call to 9-1-1.

Police were issuing a nationwide alert.

Forty-five minutes later.

Youngstown heard from police in Niagara Falls.

911 CALL FROM NIAGARA FALLS: "WE LOCATED THE CAR.

AND THERE IS A FEMALE BODY IN THE TRUNK.

" GERRY RICCIUTTI/WKBN NEWS: Although Elliott was not with the car.

Police found him a short time later riding a bicycle after Youngstown authorities sent a photo and description of the suspect.

LT.

DOUG BOBOVNYIK: "AND WE HAVE GREAT COOPERATION FROM NIAGARA FALLS, NEW YORK POLICE DEPARTMENT AND EVERYBODY IN BETWEEN.

" While Elliott remains jailed in New York.

Local authorities are working to determine where he'll be prosecuted.

LT.

DOUG BOBOVNYIK: "DID HE KIDNAP HER.

AND BRING HER TO NEW YORK.

AND WAS SHE MURDERED SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN.

THOSE ARE QUESTIONS THAT ARE UNANSWERED.

" Police are hoping to have some of those answers early next week.
